Book Review Resources in English

Library Subscription Databases

Academic Search Complete – (an EBSCOHost database, coverage is usually from 1984 to the present)

  1. Click on the Advanced Search tab.
  2. Scroll down to the Document Type box. Select Book Review
  3. Scroll up to the Find box and type in your search statement. (e.g. Enter 2-4 keywords of the title of the book, with the author’s last name)
  4. Click on the Search box.

You can choose other options to limit your search to Academic Journals, specific years, full text only, etc.

America: History and Life (coverage is from 1964- present)

  1. Type the title of the book in the Keyword box.
  2. Select Book Reviews.
  3. Click on the Search box.

Articles in the JSTOR database are available in America: History and Life.

Current Contents Connect (ISI) (coverage is from 1998-present)

  1. Select General Search box.
  2. Enter the title of the book in the TOPIC/SUBJECT  box.
  3. Scroll down to the languages and documents types boxes.
  4. Select Book Review in the Document Type box.
  5. Click on the Search box.

JSTOR (coverage is from 1800’s to three or five years ago.)

  1. Click on the Search tab.
  2. Click on the Advanced Search option.
  3. Enter the title of the book and the author’s last name.
  4. Check the Review box.
  5. Check the subjects areas you wish searched.
  6. Click on the Search box.

Lexis-Nexis Academic

  1. Click on the Guided News Search tab.
  2. In the Select a news category box select Arts & Sports News.
  3. In the Select a news source box select Book, movie, music, & play reviews.
  4. In the Enter search terms box enter the title of the book.
  5. In the Narrow to a specific date range box choose all available dates or enter dates in the From: and the To: boxes.
  6. Click on the Search box.

Research Library (ProQuest) (coverage is from 1986 to date)

  1. Click on the Advanced Search tab.
  2. Enter the title in the Advanced Search box.
  3. Click on More Search Options.
  4. In the Document Type box select Book Review. (Under Review)
  5. Click on the Search box.

You can choose other options to limit your search to Scholarly Journals, specific years, full text only, etc.

Print Book Review Indexes

Book Review Digest - REF ALCOVE Z 1219 .C96

1905-present

Reviews are listed alphabetically by the last name of the author, or by the title, when the title is listed as the main entry. Reviews of the book are arranged alphabetically by the periodical title abbreviation. Consult the List of Periodicals to determine the full name of the periodical. Each book review entry many include up to three (3) or four (4) excerpted reviews to give a range of the critical opinions cited in the reviews.

Book Review Index – REF ALCOVE Z 1035 .A1 B6

1965-present

Entries are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name or by the title when the book has more than one (1) author. Use the Title Index when you do not have the author’s full name.

New York Times Index – REF ALCOVE AI 21 .N45

1913-present

Book reviews are in the “Books and Literature” section of the index, listed alphabetically.

Readers guide to periodical literature – INDEX AI 3 .R48

1900-present

The book reviews are listed in a separate section in the back of the index, arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.

Reviews in American History – INDEX Z 1236 .R47

1974-present

Indexed in a number of online subscription databases. You can also check the Author-Title-Reviewer Index for each volume in the back of the last issue to each volume.

Women’s Studies Index – INDEX HQ 1180 .W65

1989-2002

The book reviews are indexed under the name of the author of the book being reviewed, under the name of the reviewer, under any appropriate subject headings and under Book Reviews
