Academic Search Complete is an excellent database to start your search for journal articles. This database covers a wide range of subject areas and has access to many full-text journal titles. This demonstration will show how to conduct an Advanced search to locate a scholarly article. 

Searching in Academic Search Complete

  • Left click on the Advanced Search tab
  • Type “African American” in the first Find box
  • Type writers in the second box
  • Type female in the third box
Limit your Search
  • Left click in the box next to Full Text
  • Left click in the box next to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals
  • Left click on the Search button

  • The results page will display a list of relevant topics based on the subject/search terms that you entered into the Find boxes. This search retrieved 11 articles
  • You can narrow the search further by selecting one of the subjects listed under the Narrow Results by Subject (located left side of screen)
  • Left click on Morrison, Toni to see which of these articles is about this particular person

  • The results page now displays information about two articles
  • To review an articles abstract, left click on the title
  • To view the entire full-text of an article, left click on PDF Full text link located on a the article you wish to view
  • For this demonstration, left click on the title “A direction of one’s own”

Above is the full display of “A direction of one’s own”: Alienation in “Mrs. Dalloway”. There are many important areas to become familiar with when looking at this display.

  • Print, Email, Save does exactly what the icon is titled
  • PDF Full Text, displays the full-text of the article where you can read it, save it, or print the article
  • Subject Terms, these are the subject headings that have been assigned to this particular article and left clicking on one them will direct you to all the articles available on a particular subject. For example, if you select *Women authors, you would be directed to all the articles in Academic Search Complete that are about *Women authors
  • Abstract, gives you a summary of what the article is about. It is recommended that you read the abstract before printing the entire article to get an idea of the content of the article
