FOLKLIFE OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA: OF RELIGION AND SACRED LIFE

Churches and religion have dominated the spiritual and social life of Wiregrass Georgia for generations. Community churches are often the hub of activity for rural farm families. Rural communities are often identified by the name of the oldest and nearest church. Congregations gather for regular worship, and many churches also meet for study and fellowship during the week. Although Protestant beliefs dominate South Georgia's religious culture, other religious traditions also have deep historical roots.
