FOLKLIFE OF WIREGRASS GEORGIA: OF FARMS AND FARMING

The tradition of raising hogs and curing the hams is encouraged yet today at the annual Ham and Egg Show in Lowndes County, pictured here. Ham and Egg Shows began in Fort Valley as an educational program for black farmers to improve the quality of livestock and home-produced meat. Today, Lowndes County hosts the only ham and egg show remaining in the state.
