Veterans Day, 2011

Today we recognize veterans and all of those who have offered military service. Odum Library’s first floor exhibit cases currently feature a display of our World War II books, documents, posters, and media in honor of all veterans.

November 10th marked the 236th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps; share in the celebrations!

As a Federal Depository Library, Odum’s Government Documents collection includes many publications about veterans, including these hearings:

Veterans’ history and needs extend beyond Veterans Day, of course. The Library of Congress invites public participation in the Veterans History Project. Veteran Brian McGough describes ways to help veterans after Veterans Day.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides an online database to search for the burial locations of veterans, including National and other military cemeteries and private cemeteries in which veterans’ graves are marked.

View more documents about veterans and military service at the Government Documents display, located in the Odum Library 2nd floor Reference area.

New PCs on 2nd Floor

Twenty-one PC workstations have recently been positioned on 2nd floor in front of Circulation and the IT Helpdesk. The upgraded PC workstations have Windows 7 and the Microsoft Office 2010 suite of applications. This PC upgrade facilitates printing, enhances security, and returns the Library’s 2nd floor public bank to the desired number of twenty-one workstations.

Current library computer lab information is always available from the Library Computing link found underneath the “Main Menu” heading  in the left red navigation column on most Library website pages.

Please visit the Media Center, if you are in need of an iMac as was formerly available on 2nd floor in front of the IT Helpdesk. The Media Center currently has only four iMacs. Watch for a forthcoming announcement about more iMacs  to be added  to the Media Center soon in the near future.

Thank you, and sorry for the inconvenience.

How many people . . . ?

Oct. 31st, 2011, marks the official recognition of a world population of 7 billion people. Is that a scary thought?

According to the United States Census Bureau, the projected U.S. population today, based on 2010 Census estimates, is 312,530,196.  It’s estimated that our population has a birth every 8 seconds and a death every 12 seconds, for a net gain of 1 person every 13 seconds.

This map shows the nighttime distribution of our population in the United States and Puerto Rico:

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations provides much more information about world population growth.

As we welcome our seven billionth world citizen, should we be concerned about population growth?  Yes, says the United Nations Population Fund, which sponsors the program 7 Billion Actions, A Global Movement for All Humanity. Learn more about global population, read stories of people who are trying to make a difference in their communities–and maybe even share your own story with the world!
