Neat Stuff: Conversation Cues

Conversation Cues oral language cards includes 384 picture cards and a guide book with suggested activities to help young readers, English language learners, and students with limited proficiency in English to develop oral communication skills. Each set contains 16 card decks presenting topics and words related to themes commonly taught in early grades: neighborhood, self and family, weather, machines, plants and animals. Conversation Cues sets are available to check out from the Instructional Materials Center (IMC).

Neat Stuff: Gross Factor in Kids’ Books

New in our children’s literature collection: Appropriate for readers aged 9-12, Exotic Invaders: Killer Bees, Fire Ants, and Other Alien Species are Infesting America! describes five non-native species and the environmental impact they’ve had in North America. Exploding Ants: Amazing Facts about how Animals Adapt tells all about head lice and the worms living in your dog’s nose mucus. For younger readers (aged 5-8) Jurassic Poop: What Dinosaurs (and Others) Left Behind offers amazing facts about ancient doo-doo and why scientists study it today. Enjoy!

Neat Stuff: CitySteps Math

We have six CitySteps Math theme kits available to check out from the 2nd floor Instructional Materials Center (IMC). Each kit is organized around a theme (Amazing Animals, Weather Watcher, Marvelous Me, Growing Things, My Neighborhood, or Vroom Vroom Machines) and includes colorful math manipulatives, counters, a graphing mat, activity cards and suggested activities for helping young children work with numbers and operations, patterns and relationships, geometry, spatial sense, and measurement.

Odum Library will close for Memorial Day

Odum Library will close at 12:00 midnight on May 25 and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on May 27 in observation of Memorial Day.

Neat Stuff: Super Bricks

You can sign out sets of building blocks, designed for preschoolers, from the Library. We have a set of large, lightweight blocks called Super Bricks, in three sizes and five colors, made of cardboard light enough for small children to carry and stack, but sturdy enough not to collapse if the kids sit on them. We also have large Soft Blocks made of dense foam, for quiet, safe stacking. Find these or other toys in the IMC near the 2nd floor Circulation desk, or Ask a Librarian.

Neat Stuff: LEGO

The Library has a variety of LEGO toy sets designed for preschoolers. You can sign out a Community Transport Set with public service vehicles and a helicopter, World People with 24 LEGO people from different ethnic groups, the On the Move Hospital with a doctor and an ambulance, a Farm Animals Set, or Traffic City with figures of people and vehicles to arrange on a mat showing a street intersection. Find these or other toys in the IMC near the 2nd floor Circulation desk, or Ask a Librarian.

Neat Stuff: Superman, Janeway, Picard and the “Indians”

For her book “Indian” Stereotypes in TV Science Fiction: First Nations’ Voices Speak Out Sierra Adare surveyed First Nations peoples’ responses to “Indian” characters on old TV shows including Quantum Leap, The Adventures of Superman, My Favorite Martian, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: the Next Generation. This book can be read online as a e-book through Odum’s online catalog.
