Neat Stuff: Life on Other Planets

Neat Stuff recommends Forbidden Planet, the 1956 movie featuring Leslie Nielsen and Robby the Robot. The DVD includes a documentary about science fiction in the 1950s. Odum Library also has Kenneth Heuer’s 1951 book Men of Other Planets, a mix of science and speculation about life on other planets (perhaps “thinking and talking trees” on Venus) as well as the sun, moon, asteroids and comets.

Neat Stuff: Swinging 60’s Southern Rock

Still among the OVERSIZE books on the third floor, we ran across The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music: Stories and Remembrances of a Southern Music Genre, an extensive and colorful survey of the South’s 1960’s-era good-time party bands. Ask for the CDs that go with it at the Second Floor Reserve Desk and rock out to the Swingin’ Medallions, the Jesters and the Catalinas.

And as always, if you have any other suggestions for the library, just leave a comment for us!

Further poking around in Odum’s OVERSIZE book section (third floor, northwest corner) led us to Jack Parson’s photographic look at customized lowrider cars in Low ‘n Slow: Lowriding in New Mexico. Also in OVERSIZE, a colorful photo survey of the bullfighting business in Mexico: Toro: Crossed Lives of Man and Bull.
