Tech Tip: Burn Your Discs at Media Services

With the replacement of six DVD burners all Media Center computers now support DVD +/- R Dual Layer DVDs. All media projects can now be completed on DVD-R’s. Hopefully the DVD+R’s will be phased out. The six new drives installed in the HP computers all support LightScribe Disc Labeling technology.
With the addition of LightScribe, custom DVD labels can be easily created using hundreds of pre-designed templates and the software already available on the computers. LightScribe CD’s are available in the Media Center.

Although I commend the Media Center for wanting to upgrade, I disagree with their choice of disc labeling equipment. LightScribe labeling technology is extremely slow (upwards of 30 min per disc). Not the idea situation when many students and faculty members are waiting to use the equipment. Furthermore it only labels discs in two colors, thus limiting the creative choices available. I would have preferred if the Media Center had purchased a few fast, full color disc printers instead. The best such devise out there is the Dymo DiscPainter. It labels discs in full color with text in just 1 minute.
