Check out the East African Art Exhibit

Have you seen our East African Art exhibit? The 91 pieces, mainly from Ethiopia, include a 400 year old devotional book written in Geeze, musical instruments, a large pipe, spears, sculptures, carvings, furs and textiles, which are on display in the Browsing Books area and in Archives. Archives is open from 9-5, weekdays, so be sure to stop by that part of the exhibit in the day time. Please pick up an exhibit guide when you come.

Expanded Late-Night Space During Finals

The Periodical Reading Room will be open through the night on December 4th, 5th, and 6th during Final Exams. This is in response to increasing demand and a traditional overflow from the Internet Café late at night during final exam week.

If you’d like to read about science and culture, the meaning of life, Hollywood movies that have their scientific facts all wrong, and “all the ways the cosmos wants to kill us,” we have astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Death by Black Hole: and Other Cosmic Quandaries in our BROWSE collection. Tyson, once voted People Magazine’s “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive,” has appeared on The Daily Show and three times on The Colbert Report. We also have his memoir The Sky Is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist.

Tired of studying or writing your paper? Want a break but don’t want to lose your parking space or freeze outside? Check out the VSU History Museum on the 4th floor of Odum Library. You can see the school’s story from 1906 to now; see how students learned and had fun over the last hundred years.

Thanksgiving hours

The Library will close at midnight on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday and reopen at 9 am, Saturday, November 24, 2007.

Duane Chapman’s AandE TV show Dog the Bounty Hunter has been suspended indefinitely after one of Chapman’s children released an audiotape of the Dog using racist language. We have Chapman’s biography You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide in our BROWSE collection. We also have several books about “hate speech”– language used to target or vilify a particular group. We recommend Samuel Walker’s Hate Speech: the History of an American Controversy, or Nicholas Wolfson’s Hate Speech, Sex Speech, Free Speech. Media Center Upgrades

Working on final projects for the semester? The Media Center has what you need to make the perfect media presentation! On November 30th, 2007, the Media Center will upgrade to the following software programs:

  • Adobe Encore2.0
  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  • Adobe Audition 2.0

The Media Center has recently upgraded their OCR scanning software from OmniPage Pro 15.0 to OmniPage Pro 16.0.
