Get in the Zone -- Noise Policy

Odum Library seeks to provide an environment that is conducive for study and research.  Some patrons require a quiet area for individual study, while others prefer to work within a study group.  To meet the needs of all our patrons, Odum Library has two types of zones:

  • Blue Zones designate quiet/study areas for individual study.  Noise should be kept to a minimum in the quiet/study areas (blue zones).
  • Green Zones designate active learning areas for group study.  Moderate noise is to be expected in the active learning areas (green zones). These areas consist of library service points and are more suited for group study.

Maps are available at the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the new addition and at both Circulation Desks.  These maps illustrate the layout of Odum Library and include colored zones to denote areas that are Blue Zones and areas that are Green Zones.

Patrons are asked to respect the guidelines for quiet/study areas (Blue Zones) and active learning areas (Green Zones).  If a patron is experiencing excessive noise in a designated Blue Zone, he or she is encouraged to report the disturbance to the Reference or Circulation Desk.

Cell Phones

Upon entering Odum Library, patrons are asked either to turn their cell phones off or set them to a silence mode.  Cell phone calls are discouraged in Blue Zones and are to be kept to a minimum in Green Zones
