MFHD 866 Fields for Multi-Volume Monographic Sets
For multi-volume monographs, we will enter one 866 field in the MFHD with a summary indicating which volumes we own. This is a change from our migrated records and our current practice of entering an 866 field for each volume.
Indicators
First indicator = 4
Second indicator = 1
866 subfield $8
We will continue to enter an $8 subfield in the 866 field, coded zero.
Single 866 instead of multiple 866s
Enter a single 866 field with a summary of the holdings. If we have 3 volumes, instead of entering a separate 866 field for each volume, we'll add one 866 with "v.1-v.3" in the subfield $a.
Examples:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1-v.3
866 41 $8 0 $a v.4-v.9
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1(1987)-v.3(1989) (if the spine labels show both volumes and years)
Missing Volumes
If we own part of a set and there is a break in sequence, enter an 866 for each unbroken sequence.
Example if we own volumes 1, 3 and 4 of a 4-volume set, but we don't have volume 2:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1
866 41 $8 0 $a v.3-v.4
Example if we own volumes 1 and 4 of a 4-volume set, but we don't have volumes 2 or 3:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1
866 41 $8 0 $a v.4
Example if we own volumes 2, 3, 5, and 7-10 of a 10-volume set:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.2-v.3
866 41 $8 0 $a v.5
866 41 $8 0 $a v.7-v.10
Indexes and Supplements
If a multi-volume set includes separate indexes or supplements, they are entered in separate MFHD fields.
Supplements are entered in an 867 field. Entering the enumeration for a supplement in 867 will make it display under "Supplements" in the public catalog. The indicators are the same as for 866 fields.
Examples:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1-v.10
867 41 $8 0 $a Suppl.1
Indexes are entered in an 868 field. Entering the enumeration for a index in 868 will make it display under "Indexes" in the public catalog. The indicators are the same as for 866 fields.
Example if volume 15 is the index, but is labeled with a volume number:
868 41 $8 0 $a v.15
Example if it says "Index" on the spine label:
866 41 $8 0 $a v.1-v.4
868 41 $8 0 $a "Index"
