Media Center Upgrades
Working on final projects for the semester? The Media Center has what you need to make the perfect media presentation! On November 30th, 2007, the Media Center will upgrade to the following software programs:
  • Adobe Encore2.0
  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  • Adobe Audition 2.0
The Media Center has recently upgraded their OCR scanning software from OmniPage Pro 15.0 to OmniPage Pro 16.0.

Big Read: Keynote!
Saturday, November 10, 2007, 6:30 p.m. An Evening Wrapped in Rainbows: Keynote Speaker will be Valerie Boyd, author of Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston. The keynote will take place in the Magnolia Room, University Center, Valdosta State University.

Neat Stuff: e-Anime
Our recent acquisition of 30,000 electronic books includes a few new titles on Japanese animated films, including Brian Ruh's Stray Dog of Anime: the Films of Mamoru Oshii; Susan Jolliffe Napier's Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke and Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle, and Cinema Anime: Critical Engagements with Japanese Animation.  For help reading these online, or viewing other ebrary books, please Ask a Librarian.

Neat Stuff: Science that's Easy
For those curious about science but not very good at it, we've recently added to our BROWSE collection Natalie Angier's The Canon: a Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science. Angier makes basic scientific concepts accessible to people whose brains normally reject the scientific with a loud "Ptui!"  We also have Angier's wonderful exploration of female physiology, Woman: an Intimate Geography, available to check out or read online. The Big Read: Zora Gift Basket Drawing

A gift basket will be given away at the Keynote event, “An Evening Wrapped in Rainbows,” November 10, 2007 in the Magnolia Room of the University Center, Valdosta State University.

Neat Stuff: Making Music with ACID
If you're composing music with ACID software, you can borrow ACID-compatible loop libraries from the FAMC at Odum's second floor circulation desk. Our sixteen circulating ACID loop collections include Latin percussion, techno club loops, drum samples designed by Mick Fleetwood, and more. You can find these, and an e-book on ACID, in the library's online catalog by searching for "ACID computer file" as a phrase. Or just Ask a Librarian!

The Big Read Kick-Off!!!
Sunday, October 14, 2007, 2:00-5:00 p.m. The Big Read Kick-Off will take place at John W. Saunders Memorial Park, 1151 River Street Valdosta, GA. (Formerly known as Barber Park). Click here to print a copy of a map to John W. Saunders Memorial Park. There will be food, music, reading, and copies of Their Eyes Were Watching God will be given away while supplies last to people signing up for a book discussion group.

The Big Read in Valdosta: Chidren's and Youth Festival
Saturday, November 3, 2007, 9:00 a.m. thru 2:00 p.m. Children's and Youth Festival at Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library, Valdosta, GA. The festival will include an author reading by Joyce Carol Thomas, storytelling, poetry contests, singing and dancing. Arrangements for the appearance of Joyce Carol Thomas made through HarperCollins Speakers Bureau, NY, NY. All ages will enjoy the festival so bring the entire family!

Expanded Hours for Midterms
In an effort to relieve overnight congestion in the Internet Café, and allow more space for students to study after 2:00am, the library will keep its Periodical Reading Room open from 2:00am through the night during the midterms (October 2nd through 4th). Similarly, the library plans to keep the Periodical Reading Room open overnight during Finals, the first week of December.

LexisNexis Academic Database Has a New Look!
The VSU community uses LexisNexis Academic database to
find full-text news, legal documents, and business information. Recently, LexisNexis updated the user interface for all their databases, including LexisNexis Academic. For help using this new interface, view the LexisNexis Academic tutorials.

Try RefWorks
RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds.

Access is available via GALILEO. You will need to create an account. The trial ends 10/15/2007.
