Odum Library mission Statement

The purpose of Odum Library is to be a major educational and cultural resource of the University by providing bibliographic and reference support to the academic programs of the University.

The statement of purpose is supported by the following library objectives:

1. Acquiring and providing access for bibliographic and informational resources in all media at the undergraduate, graduate and research levels consistent with the present and anticipated teaching responsibilities of Valdosta State University.

2. Assisting in providing access to information located elsewhere through utilization of local, regional, and national cooperative arrangements and computerized networks.

3. Promoting lifelong continuing education by teaching library users the necessary bibliographic skills and research methods through the traditional reference desk service and through course-related library instruction and credit courses, thus involving the Library even more directly in the educational process of the University.

4. Utilizing the library faculty's specialized bibliographic knowledge in providing leadership and assistance in the development and maintenance of library materials and in planning effective means for coordinating the efforts of the library and teaching faculty in the selection of resources in the support of the academic goals and programs and the general learning needs of the student body.
