Campus print solution
Beginning August 14th, 2008, the Campus Print Solution initiative will launch into its second phase
Students who have registered and paid for one or more courses will be provided with a per-semester print credit of $12.50. This print credit will be automatically assigned to the student’s VSU 1Card account approximately two business days before the beginning of each new term. Unused print credit balances do not roll over term to term and will be cleared from the student's account one week after the term ends. In addition to single sided b/w printing, students may also choose to apply their print credit to duplex b/w prints, color prints or copies at current print rates. Once the print credit has been depleted, then additional prints will be deducted, at current print rates, against the balance on the student’s Flex account. Printing by students in computer labs during a scheduled classroom session will not be charged against the student’s account. The Campus Print Solution initiative began last year with the installation of 30 multi-function printers across the campus funded by student tech fees and approved by the student body. So far this effort has already reduced the print volume by about 40% and facilitates a more responsible approach to printing on campus. This year, we plan to expand the number of printers and services.
The Goal
The goal of this initiative is to provide a cost effective, flexible and responsible print environment that meets the academic printing needs of the student body as well as minimizing paper and toner waste.
Benefits
The benefits of this print solution include:
- Color printing, copying and scanning available in strategic locations
- Reduced waste of supply and maintenance cost
- Duplex printing
- Job identification at printer to ensure user receives job he/she printed
- Better management of printing by both the students and the campus
Implementation
The initial implementation strategy is to target high print usage areas first; primarily the library and academic/open student computer labs. Current HP b/w printers will be replaced with multi-function devices that provide options such as color printing, scanning and copying. "One Card" utilization will provide control of the print usage for both the student and the campus.
Overview of Process
-Built-in release station in conjunction with the card swipe unit
-Print request initiates a log-in screen
-User logs in to submit his/her print job
-User swipes their "One Card" and selects print job via the embedded release station
-Print job is released to the printer
