Web Server Usage Policies

The web server, WWW, exists for the purposes of transmitting and sharing information to the public and for internal use.

We reserve the right to refuse to serve the documents of any user or group making inappropriate or unreasonable use of this service. The appropriateness of use will be determined by the VSU Webmaster who maintains the server. Any determinations on appropriateness will be based on guidelines in the Guidelines for Use of Computing Facilities, the web server usage policies here, and issues of resource allocation.

Please inform VSU Web Services of any infringements.

From Guidelines for Use of Computing Facilities (Guidelines for Publication on the VSU Web Server)

  a. The VSU email system has been installed to provide faculty, staff, and students with accounts for the purpose of internet and e-mail access.

  b. A feature of user accounts issued on the VSU email server is the ability to publish online information via the VSU web server. Consult the VSU Web Construction Kit for further information.

  c. Colleges and departments which comprise the organization of VSU are provided additional space on the VSU web server for the purpose of publishing information for both internal and public use. [Additionally, recognized student organizations are provided space on the VSU web server].

  d. The administration reserves the right to qualify information published online via the VSU web server by asking that its owners demonstrate an academic or administrative purpose.

  e. Moreover, the administration reserves the right to qualify information published online via the VSU web server by placing load restrictions on traffic that such information might invoke by removing those pages serving that information and recommending their relocation to another separate or commercial server.

  f. While the administration encourages the publication of personal information such as contact information, pictures, resumes, vitae, favorite bookmarks, creative work and other items, it does reserve the right to remove such information if it conflicts with the mission of the university or generates excessive load demands.

  g. Remember that any material placed on the web is potentially accessible to anyone on the Internet. Make us proud! Shame us by abusing copyrights, or VSU, GRITS, University System , or Internet usage policies and you may find your account revoked.

Content

  • Extremely large files should be avoided. Large file create great loads on the server, network, and client machines.
  • Music, software, and similar downloads are forbidden unless permission is granted by the server administrator.
  • Forbidden use list:
    • -copyrighted materials without authorization
      -Comet Cursor
      -EXEs
      -MP3s
      -obscene or offensive materials
  • Files should not be infected with viruses. Please try to ensure that your computer does not have a virus by obtaining anti-virus software.

Access

  • Avoid giving the password to your account to any 3rd party, even an automated service such as Blogger. The owner of the account is responsible for activity conducted through that account.

  • Access to the server is preferred to be via an encrypted protocol, currently SSH2 is the recommended client software. We can provide an educational license for the ssh.com software to VSU employees or students.

  • Access via the telnet and FTP protocols are still allowed.

  • Permission to access directories and files are assigned by the server administrators. Use the New Department / Organization Web Site or Change Technician Request Forms. Someone will be in touch with connection information regarding how to access the new site.

Programs

  • Avoid using web services hosted on other sites for counters, images, guestbooks, etc.

  • Installation of CGI or PHP scripts must be coordinated with the Webmaster for executable programs are confined to a specific location on the server.
