Interesting facts regarding Georgia Identity Theft

In 2001, the Federal Trade Commission stated that Georgia ranked 7th nationally with 2,592 victims, sixth nationally in the number of identity theft subjects per capita with 23.3 suspects for each 100,000 people and 10th nationally in victims per capita with 31.7.

In 2003, Georgia ranked 12th in the nation. Progress and awareness does indeed make a difference.  There was over 6,000 victims with 70 subjects per 100,000 people.  The top 5 cites were:

The vast majority of Identity Theft involved Credit Card fraud with  33%.  Bank fraud constituted 21% with Phone fraud closely following at 20%. Completing the numbers was Government Documents or Benefits fraud at 9%, Employment Related fraud at 7.2% and, Loan fraud at 7%.  Various other types of fraud accounted for 19% of Identity Theft cases.
