Guide for Creating Personal
Home Pages Using Dreamweaver MX
Web space is granted as part of your email account. This is a step by step guide for the configuration of Macromedia Dreamweaver to develop and publish personal home pages. In order to create personal home pages using Macromedia Dreamweaver, you will need to use your VSU Email Username in order for the web server to authenticate access. Contact the Helpdesk to have your password reset if you are unfamiliar with your current password. These steps are not directed towards chiron accounts at teach.valdosta.edu.
Step One
Open Macromedia Dreamweaver by clicking on the Start button, select Programs, then select Macromedia. From the drop down menu, select Macromedia Dreamweaver Mx.

Step Two
Once you have opened Macromedia Dreamweaver, select Site from the tool bar menu. Once you have selected Site, there will be a drop down menu of further options. From this list of options, select New Site.

Step Three
Once you have selected New Site, a new window will appear. In the following steps, you will begin to define your "web site." At this new window you will be prompted to enter a name for your new site. (For example: mywebsite) Once you have given your new site a name, select Next.

Step Four
At this window, upon selecting Next in the previous step, you will be prompted to select whether you wish to work with a server technology. For simple, personal home pages, select No. After you have made your selection, select Next.

Step Five
At this window, you are to determine how you wish to work with your files during development. We recommend that you select the first option: Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to server when ready. Also at this window, you will be prompted to select the location on your computer where all of your files relating to your site will be stored.
(For example: C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\mywebsite\)
After you have made your selection, select Next.

Step Six
At this window, further configuration is needed. This step is extremely vital in order for the web server to successfully authenticate access. You are prompted to enter a series of information:
- In the first prompt, you are asked for the way in which you connect to your remote server. From the drop down list, you will select the option FTP.
- In the next prompt, you are asked for the hostname or FTP address of your Web server. At this prompt you will enter: www.valdosta.edu.
- In the next prompt, you are asked for the name of the folder on the server where your files will be stored in.
- The next two prompts correspond to your Username and Password. You are to enter your FTP login on one line and your FTP password on the following line.
After you have entered the information in its entirety, click Test Connection.
If this is a departmental web site, then the web server administrator will need to provide you the location and change permissions to the location so you can publish. Use the Department or Organization New Site or Change Site Technician forms to request this access.
For a department or organization use the following:
Hostname or FTP address: www.valdosta.edu
Folder on the server: web/htdocs/sitename

Step Seven
Once you have clicked Test Connection, the following window will appear to alert you that a successful connection to your server has been made:

After a successful connection has been made, select Next.
However, in the event of inaccurate data submission, an error messages will appear.
If you have entered an incorrect Username and/or Password, the following error message will appear:

If you have entered an incorrect hostname or FTP address of your Web server, the following error message will appear:

If you have entered incorrectly the name of the folder on the Web server where all your files will be stored, the following error message will appear:

Step Eight
At this window you are given the option to enable "checking in" and "checking out" files. Since you are configuring Macromedia Dreamweaver for the creation of a personal home page, select No. After you have made your selection, click Next.

Step Nine
At this window, you are able to view a summary of the configuration and settings you have chosen in Macromedia Dreamweaver for the purpose of developing and publishing personal home pages. Now, select Done.

Step Ten
At this window, you can begin implementing your personal home page. On the right of the window, you will be able to view your list of files which you will create over time.
