VSU maintains web sites to provide potential students, current students, staff, faculty, and members of the community information about the university. This information should be available to everyone. Simple design methods exist to format information in a way that useful to the largest numbers of people.
Our links here are to some resources that should be useful in revealing aspects of a site's design that may hinder visitors to the site from finding the site useful.
One of the most commonly ignored design elements that can assist text-based browsers for visually impaired visitors is the Alt value in many non-text HTML tags. This attribute exists to provide a short description of the purpose of the non-text object. Describing how the object is used or what it means is the best use, not describing how the object appears.
Textual descriptions of audio and/or visual formats such a movies, animations, or music should be provided.
Documents should be structured at the HTML code level to provide the same flow of information to text readers as one would expect visually oriented readers to navigate the page.
Some browsers do not understand some of the more advanced HTML elements such as frames. Some visitors may have advanced scripting languages turned off to provide a safer browsing environment. If these elements are used, then alternate access to the same information should be available.
