What is the first step I should take if I'm having trouble in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access 2007?

If your software is not responding the way it used to, for example, if it is slow retrieving files, displays unusual error messages, etc., please make sure you have all the current updates installed and run the Office 2007 Diagnostics Tool. How should Office 2007 files be saved when using them in WebCT or on a public webpage?

To date, only a small percentage of Microsoft Office users are using Office 2007. Therefore, for broadest compatibility we recommend that you save to the Office 2003 format or .pdf format. This allows both Office 2007 and Office 2003 users the ability to view the files. The format to save the current Office 2007 file to 2003 is:

Click:               Microsoft Office button
Point to:          Save As
Click:               97-2003 format (Word Document, Excel Workbook, or PowerPoint Presentation)
Type:               Appropriate filename
Click:               Save

If you wish to change your default to save all files in 97-2003 format:

Click:               Microsoft Office button
Click:               Word Options, Excel Options, or PowerPoint Options button
Click:               Save category on the left side of screen
Click:               Drop-down box next to Save files in this format
Click:               97-2003 format (Word Document, Excel Workbook, or PowerPoint Presentation)
Click:               OK

Also, an intermittent problem has been identified regarding the opening of Office 2007 files using the Internet Explorer Browser.  This means if you upload an Office 2007 file to WebCT, the file may not open correctly.  To remedy this situation until a patch is released, please save all files that will be used in this manner to the Office 2003 format or .pdf format.

This problem only occurs when opening the file from the Internet Explorer Browser.  The Mozilla Firefox and Netscape browsers correctly handle the 2007 format.

When a fix has been released an announcement will be posted.

How is the font in the Envelope changed?

Click:               Mailings Tab on the Ribbon
Click:               Envelopes button from the Create group
Click:               Options button in the lower right corner
Click:               Font for Delivery and/or Return Address
Click:               Change to appropriate font
Click:               OK (twice) to change the envelope for this instance only, or
Click:               Default to change for all future envelopes, click yes, and then click OK
Click:               Close

How do you create .pdf files in Office 2007?

Adobe Acrobat Writer:
Adobe Acrobat 8 shipped prior to Office 2007. Therefore, Adobe is currently actively testing Acrobat with the shipping version of Office 2007 and Office 2007 files. In the first half of 2007, a free Acrobat 8 patch which will provide support in Acrobat 8 for Office 2007 will be available for download. Acrobat 7 and prior do not support Office 2007 nor Office 2007 files.

Known Limitations and Issues with Acrobat 8 on Office 2007 (taken from the Adobe webpage):
Issue: PDFMaker buttons are not installed.
Solution: Create PDF files using print to Adobe PDF in Microsoft Office.
Issue: In Windows Explorer right clicking on an Office file to create a PDF file will fail
Solution: Create PDF files using print to Adobe PDF in Microsoft Office.
Issue: In Acrobat using File > Create PDF from File > and chosing an Office file will fail
Solution: Create PDF files using print to Adobe PDF in Microsoft Office.
Issue: In Windows Explorer or Acrobat combining Office files into a single Acrobat PDF file will fail.
Solution: Once files are created with printing to Adobe PDF printer combine them using Acrobat 8's combine PDF feature.

Click:               Continue to validate
Click:               Download to download the .pdf add-in software
Click:               Run (twice) after the software has been downloaded

Close:              Out of the Microsoft website
Click:               The M/S Office button
Point to:          Save As

A new option to save as a .pdf format should now be available.  Name and save the file in the appropriate folder.

Flashpaper: If you have Contribute installed on your machine, you will automatically get a tab on your Ribbon labeled Add-ins. Flashpaper will be an option in that tab and is another way to create .pdf files.
