VSU Accounts for Access to Information Services

Below find a table for quick reference to the usernames and passwords assigned to students for access to various information systems. Also a description of the system with its purpose and usage is available.

* The listed password is the initial password. All of the listed systems provide an option for the user to change the password to make the system more secure for the user.

Banner

Username: Student ID (SSN)
Password: Initially set to birthday in mmddyy format. Everyone is encouraged to change this password. Contact Registrar for assistance.

Banner is a product of Sungard SCT Corporation which provides an avenue for students to register for classes, view grades, and maintain academic information. Login to this system uses the student's ID number (SSN) and Banner Pin (birthday in mmddyy format). From within Banner, students may change the Banner Pin to another 6 digit number to ensure privacy.

VSU Email

Username: VSU email username
Password: Initially set to birthday in mmddyy format. Everyone is encouraged to change this password. Contact IT Helpdesk for assistance.

The primary email server for VSU used to be named Grits. This machine receives and processes the thousands of emails sent to VSU students, staff, and faculty use.

Usernames for this system vary widely. Please identify your VSU email username via the instructions provided. Everyone may find their username and password in Banner. Current and future integration using LDAP and other mechanisms may continue to reduce the numbers of usernames and passwords to just the VSU email account.

BlazeNet

Username: VSU email username

This product allows some integration with Banner which allows students to register for classes from within BlazeNet. It also provides a central resource for news and web-based access to email and personal calendars. Students have direct access to GALILEO from within BlazeNet so they do not need to enter the password when accessing GALILEO from off campus. Other web-resources resources will receive such integration to provide direct login from anywhere.

Accounts for this system are imported from Banner so they initially use the VSU email username and the Banner Pin password. Make sure to change your password so that someone else may not abuse your account.

WebCT

Username: VSU email username

Professors can use WebCT to create total online classes or supplement classroom instruction with bulletin boards, chat rooms, internal email, and online quizzes. Student accounts populate the accounts database by imports from Banner at the beginning of the semester. This allows professors to perform a simple import of students into the class.

Usernames and passwords follow the Campus Pipeline paradigm above by having the VSU email account name be the username and the Banner Pin be the password. The newest version of this system at VSU allows anyone to set a question when logged in which when answered later resets the password.

Galileo

Username: Student ID (SSN) and last name

Web Servers

Username: VSU email username
Password: uses old VSU email Account. Contact IT Helpdesk for assistance.

The VSU web server WWW acquires usernames and passwords from VSU email. Other VSU web services may use similar patterns for generating usernames and passwords. Access to some servers like Chiron may require that a web designer apply for an account. The Collge of Education's coestudent and coefaculty web sites may require assistance from their adminstrators Carolyn Cox (coestudents) or Mark Swift (coefaculty).
