Distance learning and information technology will be presenting at the 2008 annual computing conference
Four abstracts, submitted by Distance Learning and IT (along with the Access Office, Kinesiology/Physical Education and SRA), have been accepted by the Board of Regents Office to be presented at the 2008 Annual Computing Conference at Rock Eagle on October 22-24, 2008.
How to Meet Students' Accessibility Needs
This was a collaborative effort between the VSU Access Office and IT/Distance Learning and focuses on how to use Blackboard Enterprise Vista, Wimba tools and other available technologies to design accessible online, hybrid and face to face courses for students with disabilities. A demonstration on how these tools can be combined to leverage universal design and ADA compliances will be demonstrated. You will also learn helpful tips and procedures for making information accessible to all students.

Faculty Student Support Without Borders
This presentation showcases VSU Distance Learning support for international collaborations. The integration of distance learning with international studies, study abroad, global collaboration, and professional development are becoming the standard for these programs. Following collaboration with institutions in Czech Republic and Turkey, Dr. Jiri Stelzer, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education, launched a new international project. Through this innovative project, VSU provided a two-day online workshop for faculty at Palacky University, Czech Republic, including presentations from VSU faculty, Distance Learning and IT staff, and Wimba, Inc. Other global distance learning initiatives at VSU are discussed.

Campus IM Deployment: A Case Study
Implementation of a campus wide instant messaging system is a cost effective and flexible way of incorporating synchronous, secure, and robust presence and messaging services into your communication technology stack. Using instant messaging on campus has the added benefit of providing services in a form with which most of your user population is already familiar. This presentation will describe Valdosta State University's deployment of just such a system from planning to implementation and beyond.

Using Oracle BI Publisher to Provide Information to your Campus
With the introduction of Oracle BI Publisher (BIP), it has now become a lot easier to provide information to members of the campus community. With the capabilities of BIP, many of the traditional methods of generating reports are beginning to fall out of favor. BIP is easy to use and makes it possible for clients to run reports that in previous years required the assistance of trained IT personnel. BIP also allows a large reduction in code replication by separating the report data and report layout. Many reports in many formats can be generated using the same data. BIP uses a MS Word style mail merge, with a little XML, to design report output making it easy for MS Word users to build report templates. Report information is also more readily accessible to our clients when they want it, instead of having to wait for IT to run and deliver reports to the client. This session will use an old mail merge report to show the conversion process.
