INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ACTIVITIES

VSU provides many entertainment and social opportunities for students. The University Center on Patterson Street is the center of student life. It contains a "food court" with small restaurants, a movie theatre, a game room, and a recreation center. The Sports Recreation Center provides indoor swimming, a rock climbing wall, and several exercise facilities.

Various agencies on campus sponsor recreational programs as well:

The Society for International Students (SIS) provides a social haven for the 200 plus international students at Valdosta State University. Members of this club organize trips, movie nights, cookouts, pool nights, parties, meetings with community based volunteer organizations, and service activities. SIS members are involved in a variety of projects like Homecoming, International Education Week, Azalea Festival, and the International Dinner. (Descriptions of these activities are provided below.) The International Dinner is the capstone event for foreign students at VSU. Every year since 1976, the students have organized an international buffet and a variety show for the Valdosta community. You are encouraged to join SIS! You can visit the SIS website for more information and photos.

  • International Education Week
International Education Week takes place in November and provides an opportunity to promote and celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Activities each day are organized by continent. You can participate in the International Education Week by displaying boards and items from your country or performing. You can share your language, culture, food, and customs at this special event.
  • International Awareness Experience
This six-week program is designed to place international students from VSU in local elementary and middle schools once a week each week to serve as a resource for teachers. Students conduct presentations about their countries and plan meaningful activities for the class. International Awareness Experience takes place during January and February.
  • Parade of Nations
Enjoy the splendor of the Azalea Festival by joining the “Parade of Nations” in March at the VSU Front Lawn. A “Presentation of nations” features your nation’s representatives wearing traditional clothing from your homeland, carrying the flag representing your nation. Your group may also have the opportunity to perform a short dance or musical selection from your country.
  • International Fair/International Village Exhibition
We hope you will be able to join us in March at Drexel Park for the International Fair. This year the 5th Annual Azalea Festival is expanding to feature the diverse cultures which enrich the greater Valdosta area by dedicating an entire area to an International Village. This is a community wide event celebrating the diversity of cultures. International students from VSU and students from local schools provide displays and performances based on the cultures of many countries. This year the celebration will be in a “marketplace” fashion to sell artifacts, curios, souvenirs, and packaged food items from the students’ native countries. There will be a performing stage area to present music or dance selections throughout the day.
  • International Dinner
The International Dinner is a cultural learning experience that transcends the dishes served and the entertainment presented. The dinner theater style evening showcases many dishes, dances, songs, and fashion from the participating countries. This year the Dinner will take place on April 23, 2005 at the Park Avenue United Methodist church. You can participate in this event by cooking a dish, performing, or wearing y our traditional clothing.
