Honors Art 1100H
Full Course Description:
Students will explore the pervasive role of art in today's culture and how it is incorporated in a wide variety of everyday aspects of our
lives including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, cinema, animation, commercial product design, clothing design, and advertising. Students will learn how original design has insured the
success of a variety of products in today's culture ranging from iMac
computers to McDonald's highway signs to Andy Warhol prints.
The first half of course will also include a number of hands-on projects for the student to help learn how the artist and designer choose and work with the formal elements of art including line, color, form, texture, shape, pattern, etc.
The second half of course will examine the historic relationships of how individual artists and their works have reflected (and sometimes challenged) the cultures of their times. Class will NOT focus on slide identification and naming of artworks, but will instead explore the meaning of the various artworks and the roles that the artist and art have played and continue to play in contemporary western culture.
Class will include field trips to local galleries as well as student reviews and critiques of individual artworks and designs. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to understand and judge particular artworks or designs and why they think they are good or bad - a success or a failure.
