Reporting scams and Phishing
Information Technology's Information Security department has defined phishing as the following:
"Phishing involves an email user receiving a notice of an urgent nature usually from a financial institution. The notice will request verification of the user's account by clicking an included link or visiting a "realistic" website complete with the company logos and other trademarks. Often, the user is requested to complete a form that may include credit card numbers, bank account information, social security numbers, PINs, or other types of sensitive information."
You can learn more details regarding phishing from Information Security's phishing FAQ's.
Step 1:
In order to report scams or phishing attempts to us, you must be able to send our Information Security branch the full header of an e-mail. To find the full header of an e-mail, please follow one of these guides:
Step 2:
Once you are able to see the full header of an e-mail, copy the full header by highlighting the header.
Then, right-click the highlighted header.
Then, left-click the Copy link.
Step 3:
Once you have copied the message header, forward the scam or phishing e-mail to security@valdosta.edu.
Note: If you are using an e-mail client, such as Outlook, you must forward the message as an attachment. Also, please copy the header from the original e-mail, not from the e-mail that you are composing.
Then, right-click the top of the message field.
Finally, left-click the Paste link. Send the e-mail.
Step 4:
To help protect the university from future threats from this account, report the e-mail to our spam filter.
Congratulations! You have successfully reported a phishing attempt to security.
If you have problems when trying these instructions, or if you have other question concerning scams or phishing attempts, please contact the Information Technology Helpdesk at 229-245-4357 or send an e-mail to helpdesk@valdosta.edu.
