Converting a Microsoft Works (.WPS) Document to Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is a word processor package included in Microsoft Office, the productivity suite installed in Valdosta State University offices and computer labs. Home users may, however, have an alternative word processor at home, Microsoft Works. This package is generally available when users purchase a new computer since it is a lower priced package. However, it has fewer features and saves documents in a different format than Microsoft Word. Microsoft Works files will end with the extension .wps as shown on the icon above. If you have a Microsoft Works document, you will not be able to open it directly in Microsoft Word. However, you can use the steps listed below to convert it to a Microsoft Word document using Microsoft Word. After you have converted it, you will be able to view, edit, and print the document on campus computers. Step 1:Launch Microsoft Word 2007.
Step 2:Click the Office button on the top-left corner. Then, click Open.
Step 3:Look for the Files of type: field at the bottom of the dialog box that appears. Click on the drop-down arrow on the right side of this field. Scroll down the list and click on Works 6.0-9.0 (*.wps).
Step 4:Use the navigation at the top of the dialog box to locate your file. Click on the file once. Then, click the Open button. Be sure you are clicking on the Open button rather than the drop-down arrow to the right of it.
Step 5:Once the document is open, click the Office button on the top-left corner. Then, click Save As. Finally, click Word 97-2003 Document in the right menu.
Step 6:Make sure in the File name: field, you see that the name of the file ends in .doc. Then, select a location to save the file using the navigation at the top of the dialog box. Finally, click the Save button.
Congratulations! You have successfully converted your Microsoft Works document into a Microsoft Word document. If you have problems when trying these instructions, or if you have other questions, please contact the Information Technology Helpdesk at 229-245-4357 or send an e-mail to helpdesk@valdosta.edu.
