Flash / Jump Drives

What is a Flash / Jump Drive?

A flash drive or jump drive is a data storage device that is small enough to fit on a key chain and can be plugged into any computer with a USB port. These devices are commonly used by students, faculty, and staff on campus in order to transport documents and data from one computer to another when the files are too large or numerous to send to themselves via e-mail.

While these devices can be used as a more permanent method of storage, we recommend against this, due to the fact that accidental damage to the device could occur during the insertion or removal process, causing data loss. Thus, it is important to exercise proper precautions when utilizing a jump drive, as shown in our guides below.

Features:

  • Highly transportable
  • No special software installation required
  • Can be used to store large amounts of data (though, this may vary depending on the capacity of each individual jump drive)
