Setting Access Permissions

Symptoms:

When you attempt to access a page or file on the your website through a web browser, you receive a Forbidden Access error message such as the one displayed below:

Cause:

This error indicates that you have not set the permissions correctly to allow access to pages or files on your website.

To correct this error, you will need to install SSH Secure Shell.File Transfer Client, which can be found on our downloads pages. Then, please take the steps listed below:

 

Step 1:

Double-click the SSH Secure File Transfer Client. Make sure you are using the File Transfer Client and NOT the Secure Shell Client.

Step 2:

Click the Quick Connect button.

Click Quick Connect

 

Step 3:

Enter ftp.valdosta.edu into the Host Name field.

Enter your FTP username in the User Name field.

Click the Connect button.

Enter the Host and User Name then Connect

 

Step 4:

Click the OK button.

Click OK

 

Step 5:

Enter your FTP password in the Password field. Then, click the OK button.

Enter your Password and click OK

Step 6:

Double-click the public_html folder in the right window.

Double-click public_html

Step 7:

Locate the page or file that his causing the error to appear. Right-click on its title. Then, left-click Properties in the pop-up menu.

Click Properties

 

Step 8:

In the Permission Mode field, enter 755. Then, click the OK button.

Repeat these steps for each page or file that causes this error to appear.
