Automatic Update Notifications for Windows XP

After releasing Windows XP to the public, Microsoft has continued to update the the product in order to:

  • Fix errors that users have encountered
  • Provide new and updated features
  • Ensure maximum compatibility with new hardware and software
  • Address security vulnerabilities in the operating system

This guide is designed to help you recognize legitimate updates from Microsoft in order to prevent your computer from becoming infected with viruses and spyware by fraudulent update notices.

 

Step 1:

Look for the yellow shield with an exclaimation mark icon in the task tray at the bottom right corner of your desktop.

Move your mouse pointer over it, but DO NOT CLICK IT. A notification message should appear saying "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates."

Look for an identical message and notification

Note: If your icon has a different appearance or a different notification message appears, please contact the IT Helpdesk for clarification, as this may be a fraudlent update notice.

 

Step 2:

Once you have determined that this is a legitimate update, double-click the shield icon.

Step 3:

An Automatic Updates window should appear. Make sure the radio button in front of Express Install is marked.

Then, click the Install button.

Select Express Install then click the Install button

Note: If a different window appears, please contact the IT Helpdesk for clarification, as this may be a fraudulent update notice.

 

Step 4:

Update installation will begin. Please be patient, as this process may take some time to complete. During this time, make sure not to turn off, restart, or log off your computer.

Step 5:

When you receive the notification that installation is complete, click the Restart Now button.

Click Restart Now after installation completes

 

Step 6:

After your computer restarts, there may be additional updates. This is caused by the fact that some updates require prior updates to be installed. Thus, if you see additional updates, repeat the steps in this guide.
