AVG Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need to switch to AVG?
If you are using a computer owned by Valdosta State University, you will not need to switch to AVG, as Information Technology centrally manages the anti-virus software and systems that protect institutional equipment. On the other hand, if you are using a computer that you own, we recommend that you switch to AVG based on the reasons listed in the next section.
2. Why the switch to AVG?
- AVG has the same potential anti-virus capability as PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security.
- AVG is free for home use and is not limited to being installed on a single computer. Information Technology anticipates the switch will provide better coverage for clients with multiple computers.
- AVG can protect other mobile devices synchronized to the computer.
- AVG provides a link scanner to make you aware of hidden threats on websites.
- AVG has lower system requirements in terms of processor and memory.
- AVG has fewer conflicts with other software packages.
- AVG has been verified not to conflict with VSU IT Services such as WebCT and Banner.
3. Does AVG do everything that PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security did?
- Firewall: AVG does not offer a built-in firewall. However, Windows has a built-in firewall.
- Anti-Spyware: AVG does not have anti-spyware capabilities. However, they offer a separate anti-spyware program. In addition, IT recommends Ad-Aware 2007 for anti-spyware.
- Spam Filter: AVG does not offer anti-spam capability, but this is irrelevant as IT has an enterprise-level spam filter that monitors all Valdosta State University e-mail accounts.
- Real-Time Scans: AVG, like PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security, offers real-time protection against viruses.
- Link Scanner: AVG will provide recommendations in regards to links on the internet. This will help clients determine whether there are hidden threats on those websites.
4. Do I have to switch to AVG?
The university’s license for PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security will expire as of January 2009. At this time, IT will not be renewing the license. PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security users will no longer be provided with protection at this time. While users are not required to switch to AVG, this is the antivirus package recommended by Information Technology.
5. Why did IT discontinue the license?
One of the primary reasons IT made the switch is due to the rising cost of a university-wide license. In order to continue to maintain this license, IT would have to make sacrifices in the quality of other campus IT services. In addition, with a number of tested free alternatives, IT was convinced that the same high quality protection would be provided without lowering the quality of the other services IT provides, by switching to AVG.
6. What type of support is provided for AVG?
Just like with PC-cillin 2008/Trend Internet Security, IT offers installation assistance for AVG. However, technical support past the point of installation is provided by the publisher of the software, Grisoft.
