Adding Password Protection to a PDF File
Step 1:
While you have a file open in Adobe Acrobat Professional, click the Advanced menu.
Then, pan over Security.
Finally, click Encrypt with Password in the pop-up menu that appears.
Step 2:
If you receive a notification message, click the Yes button.
Step 3:
In the Password Security - Settings window that appears, make sure the check box in front of Require a password to open the document is marked.
Then, enter a password into the Document Open Password: field.
Note: This is the password someone will need to view the document.
Step 4:
Make sure the checkbox in front of Restrict editing and printing of the document is marked.
Then, click the drop-down arrow on the right of the Printing Allowed field.
Finally, click High Resolution.
Note: Alternatively, you may choose None in this drop-down menu to prevent others from being able to print this document.
Step 5:
Make sure that None is displayed in the Changes Allowed field.
Also, make sure the checkbox in front of Enable copying of text, images, or other content is not marked.
Finally, click the OK button.
Step 6:
Enter a password in the Change Permissions Password field.
This must be a different password from the one entered in Step 3.
Then, click the OK button.
Note: This is the password someone will need in order to remove password protection from this document.
Step 7:
A Confirm Document Open Password prompt will appear. Re-enter the same password you entered in Step 3.
Then, click the OK button.
Step 8:
If you receive a notification message, click the OK button.
Step 9:
A Confirm Permissions Password prompt will appear. Re-enter the same password you entered in Step 6.
Then, click the OK button.
Step 10:
If you receive a notification message, click the OK button.
Step 11:
Click the File menu.
Then, click Save.
Step 12:
From this point on, if someone wishes to view your document, they will be prompted to enter the password when they open it.
Congratulations! You have successfully set up password protection for your document.
