Conflicting Software

The packages listed on this page either have been known to cause unexpected technical issues when interacting with one or more of the following Valdosta State University IT services or have not yet been verified to be 100% compatible with them:

  • Banner - Used for registration and advising
  • Blazenet - Used for e-mail
  • WebCT - Used for online classes
  • Hallnet - Used for the campus wireless network
  • Odum Library Electronic Resources - Such as electronic reserves and GALILEO

If you have any of these packages installed on your computer, we strongly recommend uninstalling them completely, as they may prevent you from being able to access these services correctly. Bear in mind that software conflicts do not necessarily occur every single time you access the service. Thus, while you may be able to access the services with no problems sometimes, you may not always be able to do so. For a list of recommended alternatives to using these products, please see the Recommended Hardware/Software pages.

Operating Systems

  • Windows Vista
Due to current security issues with Windows Vista, the Helpdesk recommends Windows XP Professional instead. You can purchase Windows XP Professional from the VSU Tech Shop.

Antivirus

  • McAfee Products
Antivrius and internet security packages published by McAfee have been known to prevent access to Hallnet. The Helpdesk recommends AVG Free Edition for your computer.
  • Norton/Symantec Products
Norton Antivirus and other antivirus and internet security packages published by Symantec have been known to prevent access to Hallnet. The Helpdesk recommends AVG Free Edition for your computer.

E-mail Clients

  • Eudora
The Eudora e-mail client has been known to have issues with campus e-mail back-end services such as our spam filter. This could prevent e-mail from being sent properly. Thus, the Helpdesk recommends running Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003 instead. You can purchase Outlook from the VSU Tech Shop. Alternatively, if you are using a computer owned by Valdosta State University, please contact the Helpdesk to request to have your e-mail client converted.
  • Mozilla Mail / Mozilla Thunderbird / Netscape Mail
All e-mail clients based on Mozilla's architecture have been known to have issues with campus e-mail back-end services such as our spam filter. This could prevent mail from being sent properly. In addition, as the publisher of the software has stopped supporting some of these packages, they no longer are being updated causing your e-mail security to be at risk.

Web Browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox Version 3 or Higher
Mozilla Firefox version 3 or higher has not been verified to be compatible with all of Valdosta State University's services. Particularly, this version of Mozilla Firefox has been known to cause content display issues with WebCT Vista. If you wish to use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser, the Helpdesk recommends running Mozilla Firefox 2.0.
  • Netscape
Since the publisher of Netscape has announced that they will no longer be supporting the browser, no newer versions of Netscape will be released. Thus, we cannot verify that Netscape will continue to be compatible with all of our services. In addition, use the lack of updates poses a security risk for Netscape users. Thus, the Helpdesk recommends either running Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

Browser Plug-ins

  • Adobe Reader Lower than Version 8
Odum Library uses Adobe Acrobat version 8 to compose all documents on their electronic reserves. Thus, to view these documents, you will need Adobe Reader 8 or higher. Otherwise, when you attempt to view the document, it will cause your web browser to crash. You can get the latest Adobe Reader from Adobe's website.
  • Java (J2RE, J2SE)
Java is a plugin required for certain features wtihin WebCT, such as turning in assignments and posting discussions. However, Valdosta State University's WebCT system is only compatible with one version of Java, which is not the latest version. To find out the version of Java you should be running, go to our recommended software page. Multiple versions or incorrect versions of Java can cause you to loose the ability to access these functions. This issue often occurs during the initial installation of Java, as it is set to update automatically by default. If this feature is not disabled, it will cause your computer to automatically download and install newer versions of Java as they become available. If this occurs, please un-install all copies of java, including the correct one. Then, re-install the correct one and disable the automatic update feature.
  • Toolbars such as Google Toolbar and Yahoo Toolbar
Toolbars such as Google Toolbar and Yahoo toolbar have built in pop-up blockers that can prevent services that open additional windows, such as Blazenet and WebCT, from functioning properly. The Helpdesk recommends to uninstall any toolbars. Also, please note that some software downloaded from the internet may include Google or Yahoo toolbar. If so, you will need to either uncheck the option to install the toolbar when installing the software, or you will need to uninstall the toolbar afterwards.

Other Software

  • Peer-to-Peer Filesharing
Peer-to-peer filesharing software, is prohibited on the Valdosta State University campus network. In addition, they are known to be an entry point malware (viruses, spyware, adware, etc.) into a computer system. Thus, we highly recommend uninstalling this form of software.
