Welcome to Social Studies
The Georgia Governor's Honors Program is the longest running program of its kind in the United States. The Social Studies department is comprised of some of Georgia's most motivated and talented high school students. The faculty is committed to providing an academically challenging curriculum through active student engagement and a wide diversity of teaching methods. We believe that worthwhile learning occurs within a variety of experiences. Our goals are to foster an appreciation of this continuing process throughout our students' lives and to empower them to become lifelong learners.
Teachers
The five Social Studies instructors have a rich background in their respective disciplines and as such, offer courses that are unlike any which are traditionally taught at the high school level. The topics include primary research, attachment disorders, just war theory, military psychology, the year 1968, early Christian heresies, Machiavelli, the New York Irish in the era of the Civil War, the impact of dams, and African studies.
Discussions
The Social Studies department encourages our students to contribute to the learning environment by articulating their own ideas and opinions, and also listening and analyzing the thoughts and comments of their peers. Each morning begins with a discussion of current events using The Atlanta Journal Constitution. These lively discussions often carry over into our classrooms and serve as an additional avenue for students to explore their own and others' social, economic, political, and ethical views.
