COGNITIVE SCIENCE..............

Instructor Name: Victoria Meltz
Position away from GHP: Retired from teaching
Education: Studied in South Africa at University of Witwatersrand and Rhodes University. Was the queen's guide and a representative at World Camp.
Ms. Meltz...
What is the area of focus this year at GHP?
The area of study for my class is the brain and its cognitive studies.
What activities/strategies are used to accomplish your instructional goals?
The students are taking part in independent research work. We also view videos, do creative projects, and take part in dissections.
What will be your students' culminating activity?
They will make presentations on the research topic of their choice. Some of the students are making use of fellow GHPers and using them as volunteers (or guinea pigs!) for their experiments.
How much do you like teaching GHP?
Oh, I love it. It's lots of fun.
If you were a GHP student today, what would you want to be your major?
Visual Arts.
What words or phrases do you overuse?
I don't think I overuse any phrases.
Most annoying thing?
The cold food in the lunchroom sometimes. And the fact that coffee is only offered at breakfast. There should be coffee offered at every meal!
Why Cognitive science?
I love studying the brain. It's a big topic right now, ever since the 90s. It's important to study things like intelligence and disease prevention in order to improve our quality of life. I hope to keep my mind active throughout my life!
Would you like to come back next year? Why or why not?
If I'm invited! The boyfriend might not be too happy about it, but we'll see.
Any parting comments or thoughts for the day/year?
Some people don't like young minds to investigate and find out things for themselves, but don't let that discourage you! Don't let this wonderful program go down the tube.
FIELD ECOLOGY..............

Education: Bachelors and Masters in ecology at UGA
Ms. Schoen...
What is the area of focus this year at GHP?
This year the emphasis is on field ecology.
What activities/strategies are used to accomplish your instructional goals?
I want my students to be a part of "real" science, so they do a lot of field work. They also have hands-on labs and individual research.
What will be your students' culminating activity?
Their individual research will be their culminating activity.
How much do you like teaching GHP?
I LOVE IT. It's teacher heaven!
If you were a GHP student today, what would you want to be your major?
Science, of course!
What words or phrases do you overuse?
Dirt is complicated..., Ponds are deep, and Use the thermometer to thermometize.
Most annoying thing?
Mosquitos!
Why Biology?
I love it because living things are the best! Why would you want to study something that doesn't move or breathe or crawl?
Would you like to come back next year? Why or why not?
... If they invite me!
Any parting comments or thoughts for the day/year?
6 weeks go by fast!
