Mr. Cumiskey is the teacher of the brass section at GHP. He frequently organizes the brass section in to brass quintets. The quintets perform an assorted grouping of quintet music that ranges from Brahms to Gabrieli. He also teaches a theory class and the music elective class How to Listen to Music. In How to Listen to Music the students listen to an array of classical music and pick out different tools that the composer uses to captivate his audience.
When not organizing brass quintets at GHP, Mr. Cumiskey is a professor of trombone at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. He earned a Master of Music from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music from Southern Methodist University. He has been in music for nineteen years, since the age of seven. According to Mr. Cumiskey the greatest moments in his life were when he was accepted into The Juilliard School and when he left as well.
If Mr. Cumiskey was attending GHP now he said that he would be a brass major. Everyone has words they overuse, but Mr. Cumiskey has the words "practice","subdivide", "breathe correctly", and "good rhythm." His number one pet peeve is lack of preparation. Mr. Cumiskey wants to leave every musician with a few parting words...breathe, subdivide, and range of sound.
