Magazine sale scam 11-09-2009

The University Police Department has received information concerning two individuals seen both on campus and off campus going door to door selling magazine subscriptions. They associate themselves as being fellow students and members of the Greek Sorority/Fraternity organizations. They claim to be selling magazines for charity. In lieu of buying an annual subscription, they are asking for donations. The individuals in question were described as a white male 6'02, with shaggy blonde hair, wearing surfer type clothing, accompanied by a white female with brown hair. They were last seen leaving the Lil Jo Apartments in a dark colored SUV. Please be aware it is illegal in the City of Valdosta to solicit door to door without a city permit and after dark. Likewise, no one has been authorized to solicit individuals for magazine subscriptions on campus. CRIME ALERT 11-02-2009 Update: 11-05-2009

Update: On 11-05-2009, another report of Public Indecency was called into the University Police Department. The suspect was quickly apprehended and an arrest was made. This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case should contact the University Police Department at 229 333-7816.

The University Police Department is currently investigating several reports of Public Indecency. According to each of the witnesses, the individual committing the offense is described as; a black male in his twenties. He has large eyes, dark complexion, medium build, and wears his hair short, close to the head, or shaven. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with white piping at the shoulders, black sweatpants or long baggy shorts.

This subject has reportedly been seen both on and off campus in a state of partial nudity engaging in indecent fondling and exposure of his sexual organ. Should anyone have contact with this subject DO NOT wait to report. REPORT IMMEDIATELY to the University Police Department at 333-7816.

Please be aware of your surroundings at all times and engage in the buddy system when walking on or about campus. Remember, the University Police Department offers an escort service to all students, staff, and faculty members. Crime Alert

On 05-07-09 at about 10:00 am, a traffic stop was made near Oak Street and College by the Valdosta City Police. The suspect ran from the City Police towards the center of campus. The suspect was seen on our camera system running in front of the library towards Patterson Street. A search of the area was done by several local agencies and the suspect was not found. The suspect has been arrested and the City Police are working on the case.

On 04-05-09 around 9:52 pm, a sexual assault occurred off campus on College Street. The suspect is described as a black male driving a white Ford Crown Victoria with a spotlight.

CRIME ALERT UPDATE arrest

On 02-02-09, VSU Police arrested a female suspect for the trashcan fires in Langdale Hall.

On 02-02-09, there were two small trash can fires in Langdale Hall. One on the first floor and another on the fifth floor. Anyone with information is asked to please contact University Police. There is a $10,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of this person(s).

On 01-29 and 01-30-2009, in the early morning hours a small trashcan fire was extinguished on the fifth floor of Langdale Hall. Anyone with information is asked to contact the University Police Department at 333-7816.

On 01-15-2009, at approximately 12:00 pm an armed robbery and sexual assault occurred off campus at 422 Connell Road, Spanish Mission Apartments. In the interest of safety please make sure to secure your residence at all times and verify anyone knocking at your door prior to opening
it. Please report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agency.

CRIME ALERT

Over the weekend of Nov. 21-23, 2008, several small fires were started in trashcans and papers were burned on bulletin boards in Langdale Hall. Police are asking that any one with information to please contact the police department 229-333-7816. A reward is being offered.

If you go to answer a doorbell or knock, verify through a window or peep hole who you are going to make contact with. This is the time when home invasions and burglaries are on the rise; so please be mindful to keep your self, your property, and your residence safe.

On September 29, 2008, a Valdosta State University student was assaulted on the front lawn of the campus near Nevins Hall at approximately 3:15 am. The suspects are described as two black females, and one white female. The suspects were all dressed in black.

On June 17, 2008, a robbery by sudden snatching occurred at approximately 8:10 pm in the Fine Arts Parking Lot. The offender was apprehended and an arrest was made. The victim's property was recovered and returned to it's rightful owner. If you notice any suspicious persons or activity on campus please notify the University Police Department to investigate. VSU Police Give an All Clear to University Center South

On 03-19-2008, at 1:30 p.m. Valdosta State University Police gave an “all clear” to reopen University Center South at 1:30 p.m. today. VSU Police evacuated University Center South, in response to a written threat that was found in the building at approximately 9:30 a.m. Classes for VSU and the South Georgia College Entry Program will resume today at 2 p.m.

This morning, a campus-wide email was sent to all faculty, staff, and students notifying them to remain clear of the south end of the University Center until further notice. VSU Police along with Moody Air Force Base K-9 bomb team performed a search of the building and no threat was identified.

CRime Alert: Students Urged to Use Police Escort Service

On Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at approximately 3:10 a.m. a Valdosta State University student was robbed at gun point in the parking lot on Georgia Ave. The suspect was identified as a black male wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The student was not injured. The suspect fled on foot and the VSU Police Department and Valdosta City Police Department immediately searched the area. Students are advised to use extreme caution when returning to their residence halls late at night and use the VSU Police escort service by contacting 229-333-7816.

On February 7, 2008, Valdosta State University Police Department evacuated Centennial Hall, in response to a bomb threat that was placed through a call to an administrative office on campus at approximately 3:10 p.m. Moody Air Force Base K-9 bomb team performed a search of the building and residents were allowed back in the residence hall at approximately 6:10 p.m. VSU Police is investigating and a $5,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of an individual or individuals involved. Valdosta State University received a bomb threat on Friday, Feb. 1, 2008. VSU’s Police Department evacuated Centennial Hall at approximately 11:45 p.m., in response to a bomb threat that was placed through a call to the Emergency 911 Center. Students and staff were escorted to a secure location. Valdosta Fire Department and Police responded and assisted with the evacuation of the building. Moody Air Force Base K-9 bomb team performed a search of all three floors of the building. Residents were allowed back in the residence hall at approximately 4 a.m. VSU Police is investigating and a $5,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of an individual or individuals involved. On November 04, 2007, Centennial Hall received a bomb threat. The University Police Department responded and evacuated Centennial Hall at approximately 10p.m., in response to a bomb threat that was placed through Lowndes County Communications Center's emergency line. Students and Staff were escorted to a secure location. Moody Air Force Base K-9 Bomb team assisted in clearing the building. Residents were allowed back in the residence hall at approximately 1:30 a.m.

O.C.G.A. 16-10-28 (b) Transmitting a False Public Alarm reads: A person who transmits in any manner a false alarm to the effect that a destructive device or hazardous substance of any nature is concealed in such place that its explosion, detonation, or release would endanger human life or cause injury or damage to property, knowing at the time that there is no reasonable ground for believing that such a destructive device or hazardous substance is concealed in such place, commits the offense of transmitting a false public alarm and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than five years or by a fine of not less than 1,000.00 or both.

This crime is a Felony and any person caught in violation of this code section will be prosecuted.

On November 01, 2007, the University Police Department was made aware of an armed robbery that occurred off campus at College Station Apartments. For this reason, we would like to remind everyone to use extra safety precautions both on campus and off campus.

Crime Alert

On August 17, 2007 a Burglary was reported in Langdale Hall. Someone entered the Victim's room and committed a theft therein. An Apple Video Ipod was removed from the victim's room without permission. Anyone having information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Valdosta State University Police Department Investigation's Division at (229) 333-1364.

* For your safety and that of your roommate's please make it a habit to secure your residence hall door when leaving your room for any amount of time. Additionally, locking up your valuables in a secure place in your room will help to protect them from theft. Always lock the door when sleeping and never give or loan out your room key to anyone else.

Safety Alert

On August 19, 2007, two black males with shoulder length dreadlocks were traveling west on West Mary Street in a Silver Chevrolet Cobalt displaying a Florida tag. A female student was walking on West Mary Street alongside the cemetery at the time. Upon observing the lone female, the driver stopped the car. One of the males got out of the car and approached the young lady. When he began to talk to her, the young lady fled the scene running. Another female student driving by observed the incident and seeing the young lady running away attempted to divert the black male's attention by blowing her car horn. The alarmed female student was unharmed and taken to safety.

Please avoid walking down West Mary Street. When walking on or around campus be aware of your surroundings, walk in well lit areas, take the most direct route to your destination, and travel with friends. The Valdosta State University Police Department provides 24 hour escorts. Additionally, we recommend Students, Staff, And Faculty members program our Emergency and Non-Emergency numbers into their cell phones. You may utilize any of the the Free Standing Emergency Phones which are strategically located throughout campus and in parking lots to request an escort or emergency assistance.
