RA Fire Training Day 2006
What We Do
Environmental and Occupational Safety is an administrative office in the Division of Finance and Administration. We exist to enhance the on-campus experience of students, faculty and staff by ensuring a safe and healthy environment. This mission has many facets, such as Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety and Fire Safety.
The Environmental Safety facet includes proper storage and handling of chemicals and proper management and disposal of wastes, including hazardous waste, universal waste, and biohazardous waste. Other elements include appropriate management of construction sites to prevent erosion and protect water quality, fuel storage tanks, and asbestos containing materials.
Occupational Safety focuses on safe work practices and includes VSU's Right-to-Know program (to advise students, faculty and staff how to obtain information about chemicals they may encounter) and safe work practices for laboratories and other hazardous work environments.
As part of the Fire Safety program, Environmental and Occupational Safety offers training in fire extinguisher use and proper evacuation procedures. A special focus is collaborating with Housing and Residence Life to provide this type of training for Residence Hall Directors and Resident Assistants.
In addition to these responsibilities, Environmental and Occupational Safety also maintains compliance with applicable Federal, State and Local regulations.
