Thanks for visiting us! The Valdosta State University Grounds Department, a division of Plant Operations, is committed to providing the University community with the highest quality service in the areas of Horticulture, Landscape Maintenance, Landscape Construction, Irrigation and Trash Compaction.

The distinctive beauty of our campus is maintained twelve months a year by a team of dedicated men and women who take pride in their role of making the physical attraction of the campus a positive recruiting tool. Routine work is scheduled and tracked through a computerized Preventive Maintenance system which addresses everything from mowing frequency to equipment servicing to fertilizer applications. Work outside the routine is handled by work order. For a broader view of what our responsibilities entail, I would like to invite you to read our Scope of Services.

Grounds maintenance services are divided up in four distinct areas---North Zone, South Zone, Greenhouse and North Campus, and Sports Turf and Campus Maintenance.

Adolph Butler
Grounds Foreman I
North Zone
adbutler@valdosta.edu

The North Zone refers to that part of Main Campus extending from One-Mile Branch northward to Moore St. All phases of routine maintenance are handled by Mr. Butler and his crew. The only area not maintained by this crew is the Front Lawn.

Huey Hiers
Grounds Foreman I
South Zone
hhiers@valdosta.edu

The South Zone refers to that part of campus extending from One-Mile Branch southward to Gordon St. It also includes all areas west of Oak St. and south of Baytree. Mr. Hiers’ crew also is responsible for minor concrete repairs to sidewalks on campus. The only area not maintained by this crew is Reames Field.

Bobby Flowers
Horticulturist
Greenhouse and North Campus
bflowers@valdosta.edu

Routine maintenance of property at our North Campus facilities belongs primarily to this crew. The only areas not maintained by this crew are Billy Grant Field and Women’s Softball Field. Mr. Flowers is also responsible for all propagation and maintenance of flower beds on campus. Flowers are grown from seed or cuttings in our greenhouse located at North Campus. Mr. Flowers also provides expertise in the field of pest management for the entire campus.

Marshall McLane
Grounds Foreman I
Sports Turf and Campus Maintenance
mmclane@valdosta.edu

Mr. McLane and his crew are, basically, responsible for all other maintenance issues not already covered. These include full maintenance of all sports turf (Billy Grant Field, Women’s Softball, Reames Field, and Front Lawn), irrigation maintenance and irrigation scheduling, trash compaction, and equipment maintenance and repair.

If you are not already a part of the VSU campus community, we invite you to visit us and tour the campus. Our commitment in Grounds has always been to provide a unique natural environment designed to accommodate the needs of our students and the rest of the University community. We welcome your feedback and the opportunity of serving you during your stay here!
