The Making Work Pay credit enacted by the Federal Government has impacted qualified employees’ federal withholding amount. The change took place with the 3/13/2009 paycheck for biweekly employees and 3/31/2009 paycheck for monthly employees.

IRS Advises Employees to Check Withholding

With six months remaining in the year, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding individual taxpayers to check their 2009 federal income tax withholding levels to ensure there are no surprises when returns are due in April. Because the Making Work Pay credit lowered tax withholding rates this year for 120 million American households, taxpayers should ensure that enough tax is withheld if they are among these groups: multiple job holders, families with both spouses working, workers who can be claimed as dependents by other taxpayers, and pensioners. Failure to adjust withholding could result in taxes owed or smaller refunds.

The IRS withholding calculator at IRS.gov and Publication 919, How Do I Adjust My Withholding?, can help a taxpayer compute the proper tax withholding. If you have any additional questions please contact a tax professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. If my timesheet was turned in late, will I still get my paycheck on time?
No.

2. May I allow someone else to pick up my paycheck?
Yes, if you give the Payroll Department written permission via memorandum to release your paycheck to a specific person on a specific date. The memo should include your name, SSN, as well as the name of the person you want to pick up the check.

3. If my paycheck contains an error made by the Payroll department, will I get a replacement check the same day?

Errors reported by 11 a.m. on payroll day will be corrected the same working day. The next replacement day will be the 3rd working day after a payroll day.

4. I lost my check. Can you prepare another one for me?

If your check has been lost or stolen, we must first place a stop payment order on the check. We must then wait 24-hours to verify that the check has not cleared the bank before we can replace it.

5. How do I know if the tax deductions are correct? How do I make changes in my Federal and State deductions?

Your tax deductions are printed on your payroll check. We have federal and state tax forms which you may use to change deduction amounts. Generally, the number of allowances you claim and your filing status determine your deduction amount. We are not tax practitioners, but will help you in any way with any questions you may have.

6. Can I have my paycheck directly deposited?

We offer direct deposit for all VSU employees (Faculty/Staff/Administrators/Students/Temporary). You must complete a direct deposit request form and attach a voided check or a direct deposit enrollment form from your financial institution (bank). Your information will "prenote" (be tested) on the next paycycle. With successful completion of the prenote process, each paycheck thereafter will be directly deposited in your bank account. Pay advices may be reviewed on Employee Self Service anytime.

7. Do I need to come into the Payroll Office to be set-up on Payroll?

No, new student employees should visit the Student Employment Office in Langdale Hall and all other new employees must be set up through the Human Resources Department which is located in the University Center, Entrance #5.

8. Why wasn't I paid for my overtime?

You will be paid time and a half for each hour which exceeds your scheduled number of work hours each week. If you have used sick leave, annual leave, or holiday time in order to accumulate excess hours, it will be paid straight time.

9. Why aren't advices printed and mailed?

"Governor Sonny Purdue and Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. have stated that increasing state government efficiency is one of their primary objectives. In anticipation of the mandatory use of Employee Self Service by all employees of the university system, effective January 1, 2008, Valdosta State University will no longer print payroll advices for employees on Direct Deposit or Cash Pay.

Information regarding your pay can be found on the Employee Self Service Menu. Remember you can click on Employee Self Service from the VSU main page. Take a few minutes now and log onto the system. Review your benefit information and your contact information. The VSU deadline date for all employees to have accessed and acquired a password for Employee Self Service is December 31, 2007.

For those of you who already have a PeopleSoft log-in and password, please continue to use that same log-in and password for Employee Self Service."
