Funding the Strategic Planning Initiatives
The Initiative Process
Strategic Planning Initiatives are proposals for programs, projects, events, or upgrades on campus that can enhance our overall operation and help achieve our organizational mission. Departments propose these through the Strategic Planning Database. Initiatives are then given a priority ranking by Department Heads and a final ranking by the Vice President or Cabinet member representing that campus unit.
The BAC uses these rankings and the goals in our University’s Strategic Plan to identify the initiatives that merit immediate funding. This arduous process begins with the information describing proposed initiatives provided in the Strategic database; discussions are held by department heads, deans, Vice Presidents, and Cabinet members, and eventually final rankings are decided. Unfortunately, not all initiatives can receive funding. The BAC has to balance the needs across our campus for maintenance of our current programs and facilities with the need to develop new programs and generate new opportunities for growth. The BAC frequently invites members of the campus community to give additional information regarding proposed initiatives, and considerable discussions are held prior to issuing recommendations.
The initiatives are recommended for funding in several phases. A group receiving high priority is recommended for immediate funding in the current fiscal year. Another group is recommended ‘pending funding’ and departments are notified to continue preparations in case funding is available within this fiscal year. A third group of initiatives is considered for funding in the next fiscal year’s budget process.
