Dr. Greg Jennings, Jennings Environmental LLC, presented his final report on the feasibility of restoring the campus creek to its natural state. Dr. Jennings cited many factors causing existing creek conditions: 1) the stream channel is unstable with high stream bank erosion 2) the channel is incised with no access to an active floodplain 3) the channel does not transport sediment efficiency resulting in mid channel sand bars 4) the stream pattern is very straight resulting in little diversity. The hour long presentation was attended by officials of the city, county, members of the university community and representatives of the Garden Club of Georgia. Several opportunities exist for restoration of our campus creek. They are: 1) adjust the stream to provide a more stable pattern 2) provide access to an active floodplain 3) stabilize eroding stream banks to reduce sentiment inputs to the stream 4) remove invasive exotic plants and establish native plant communities 5) remove pollution sources 6) provide educational and research opportunities in hydrology, geomorphology, biology and environmental science. Jennings who is also Associate Director of the North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute at North Carolina State University can be reached at: Greg_Jennings [AT] ncsu [DOT] edu.
