Division of Finance and Administration
Week of June 20 - A Day in the Life of George Rudd
George Rudd always has something to do at Valdosta State University. As an electrician II, Rudd installs lights and receptacles and does electrical and irrigation location, a job in which he uses a machine to find lines underground. He also does some work installing computers around campus.
A typical workday for this Vietnam veteran starts between 7 and 8 a.m. He reports to Plant Operations first thing so his supervisor can tell him where to go on campus. While his destination usually changes everyday, he is currently spending most of his time installing lights in the new offices being built in the University Center.
"I like doing construction because I like the challenge," Rudd said. "And I like locating because I like to see what is underground."
Rudd said that he helps the Division of Business and Finance by finding the most cost efficient approach to doing his job.
"We look for the safest and cheapest way to do things," Rudd said. "Contractors would charge a little bit more because they wouldn't show as much concern for cost effectiveness. We do what we can to help the budget."
Rudd has worked at VSU for 22 years and plans to retire in another five. He enjoys gardening at home and said that retirement will be time for him to catch up on his hobbies.
