Week of August 15 - Fall Semester Move In Day

Day traffic along Patterson Street

Every year Valdosta State University sets aside a Fall calendar day where normal campus activities are suspended to help returning students move into the campus residence halls. Our community spirit soared beyond the hot and humid day as many pitched in to welcome and assist students with their moving activities. A student's parent describes his Move In Day experience in an email to the President:

Subject: Freshman move in...........Langdale Hall.

Today was a most amazing experience. The trauma of my daughter leaving home for college and the thoughts of what it might be like to drag the entire contents of our car up to the fifth floor were overwhelming. Yet at the end of the day, I felt even better about VSU than I would have ever expected

We were greeted on the street and directed to the front of the dorm with unloading instructions. We never got the chance to unload as we were overwhelmed with numerous students, a new basketball coach, and others, cheerfully wanting to help carry the contents of the vehicle to our daughter's room. I was only allowed to carry one very small bag and her precious stuffed dog.

There are a lot of people at VSU that need to realize how welcome and comfortable they made us and I suspect many others feel today.

I hope this email reaches all that are responsible. They need to know what an amazing task they pulled off and we want them to know we truly appreciated it.

Sincerely,
A student’s parent
