Last Saturday, 14 of Valdosta State University's faculty and staff gritted their teeth and clenched their fists to win two victories at the Lowndes County Partnership for Health Corporate Cup event.
The Corporate Cup event culminates the Partnership's Corporate Challenge, in which local companies and businesses win points by improving wellness among their employees. Throughout the year, teams win points by participating in health screenings and other various community health events, such as Relay for Life.
The VSU Corporate Cup team competed against 15 other teams at the fields of the Valdosta Technical Institute. Members were Holly Decker, Campus Mail; Bob Delong, Environmental and Occupational Safety; Courtney Edington, Human Resources; Laura Hoffman, Counseling Center; Ralph Gosnell, Information Technology; Brian Lucas, Employee and Organizational Development; Sementha Mathews, University Relations; Mike Meacham, Social Work; Felicia Mohr, Reserver Officers Training Corps; Bill Moore, Information Technology; Becky Murphy, Employee and Organizational Development; Tim Murphy, Auxiliary Services; Barbara Tucker, Institutional Research and Policy Analysis; and Tim Yorkey, Employee and Organizational Development,
"The team worked together very well," Bob Delong, director of Environmental and Occupational Safety, said. "The two co-captains, Becky Murphy and Sementha Mathews, were great and they did an outstanding job pulling everyone and everything together."
The events included a team a relay run, volleyball, tug of war basketball free throw, dizzy lizzy, and a horseshoe toss. The team won two medals by placing third in tug of war and the horseshoe toss.
"If feels great to place in two events," said Becky Murphy, associate director of Human Resources for employee development. "This was our first time competing and none of us knew what to expect."
Delong agrees that winning feels great, but the next day it really hurts.
As for next year's Corporate Cup, Murphy would like to compete again and hopes to start recruiting a new team as soon as the Corporate Cup event date is set.
