Campus residents will have a friend in uniform. Public safety is a major concern on college campuses.  Valdosta State Police department is implementing a new program to help students.  The VSU police department is working hard to keep students safe.

New actions are taking place in the near future.  A new program currently called Adopt-a-Cop will be off the ground soon. Other universities in the nation have used this program. The Adopt-a-Cop program will assign an officer to each residence hall to give more visibility of officers.  It will give students the chance to become familiar with an officer and be more comfortable about voicing concerns. The officers will be in the residence halls various hours a day while still performing their other duties. The program will help students develop a relationship with an officer.  The officers will become liaisons with the residence hall advisors and will conduct programs within the respective halls.

Cpl. Carolyn Glock is excited about the program.  “Students can expect to establish a relationship with the VSU police department through increased officer presence in their residence halls,” Glock said.  With the Adopt-a-Cop program, students will be able to have a name behind the face.

Cpl .Glock advises students to use the department’s many resources.  It has information on dating violence, laws, personal safety, alcohol awareness, sexual assault, among others.

Cpl. Glock encourages students to program the campus emergency number into their cell phone directories.  Students can work with the police by contacting an officer if they see suspicious activity.  Public safety is not only the police’s issue, but students, faculty, and everyone else on campus.
