Director's message

A Message from the Director. . .

The great philosopher Albert Einstein advised to "Never regard study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs." The advice in this quote “represents the philosophy of the VSU Upward Bound. Program perfectly in that it demonstrates the expansion of horizons for its participants. The VSU Upward Bound Program assists its participants to envision a future that they previously could not see; to identify opportunities previously unknown to them”   As I see it, Upward Bound can show students how to "establish their own goals and expectations and then go on to achieve them." We are advocates of academic rigor. We teach the skill sets students need in order to successfully engage their academic courses.

We expect and teach students how to achieve excellence in the academic setting and in larger setting of life and career. And in so doing, UB takes the edge off student fears and puts in its place success strategies. UB is here to help prepare high school students for college through academic, cultural, and social experiences.

The program gives students access to a university campus before they actually matriculate... if they participate faithfully. Upward Bound's academic offerings can help students with SATs, ACTs and their course work. Culturally, we try to show students the world. We expose participants to the world we hope they will be entering. Finally, we help students to mature and grow. We surround students with role models close to their age in order for students to have an example in front of them.

So, if you are ready for the challenge, please look to Upward Bound to escort you on a path that will take you where you want to go.
