Professional Writing Track
Students who choose the professional writing English major or minor concentrate in written communication, including business, technical, and/or legal writing; advanced composition; writing technologies; and rhetoric. Electives may include pre-professional internships and courses in creative writing, journalism, or linguistics . Like the traditional option, the professional writing option prepares majors and minors for careers in business, the professions, and publishing as well as for graduate school.
The following educational outcomes will be achieved by students in the professional writing English major. Professional writing majors will write and articulate ideas clearly, concisely, and correctly in a variety of technical and non-technical areas, and in various media; understand the basic principles of written organizational communications and apply these principles to real-world situations; use different kinds of computer software, employing principles of rhetoric, layout, and design appropriate to the rhetorical situation; become aware of the cultural and historical contexts of written communication; use information ethically and responsibly; read and analyze literary texts and be able to communicate this analysis clearly and convincingly.
