Achieving Universal Design: Retrofitting Streaming Media with Captions
Presenter: Darryn Ostrander, Director of Instructional Technology & Distance Learning, Darton College
Co-presenter(s): Isaac Dixon - Darton College
Achieving universal design and ADA compliance while providing rich multimedia content can be a technology challenge, especially when trying to re-task previous non-compliant content. By synchronizing streaming text transcriptions with audio, video or other streaming media, captioning can be added to existing content. The content and the captioning are embedded in a SMIL file format viewable in a standard web browser with common plug-ins installed. Content reconstruction to add the captioning is simplified by the use of template files containing code to display the embedded content players. Delivery of captioned content within WebCT Vista will be demonstrated. Coding examples and links to template resources will be provided.

“Let’s Give ‘em Something to Talk About”: Using Discussion Boards to Facilitate Student Interaction in Reading-Based Courses
Presenter: Sharon L. Gravett, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Valdosta State University
Co-presenter(s): Pat Miller, Professor of English, Valdosta State University
Presentation description: Looking for a (fairly) painless way to incorporate WebCT into your courses? Consider using the discussion tool to set up a classroom discussion board. It’s a great way to get students to engage material while they engage each other in an informal conversation about shared reading or in-class material. The practice allows students to hone writing and argumentation skills while it provides the professor an easy way to gauge student participation. The discussion board allows students to keep a record of their “thought” development that they can use as a basis for papers or presentations.
This presentation will be primarily “show and tell” in the context of an informal conversation with colleagues.

Creating Course Lectures for Online Environments
Presenter: Barry J Monk, Assistant Professor, Mathematics, Macon State University
Co-presenter(s): Mary Dwyer Wolfe, Assistant Professor , Mathematic, Macon State College
There are many who subscribe to the notion that online courses require more than a textbook, an electronic version of course notes, and the occasional quiz. Professors Barry Monk and Mary Dwyer Wolfe from Macon State College utilize the philosophy that for every component in the traditional classroom there should be an analogous component in the online environment that is at least as good. There exists a great deal of relatively inexpensive equipment that instructors can use to make online course lectures of their own. In this presentation, Monk and Wolfe will discuss some of this equipment and will demonstrate the production of an online course lecture from scratch using tools including Mimio, Camtasia, and PowerPoint.

Survival Strategies for Living Online
Presenter: Ellen W. Wiley, Professor, Curriculum, Leadership, and Technology, Valdosta State University
One of the most challenging survival tasks for an online instructor is how to manage all the “stuff” within a course. You know stuff like all those learning modules which generate all those student submissions, which then need feedback, which then must be returned, and finally need to be archived for things like accreditation visits. You know the drill if you have been an online instructor. Sometimes it becomes an issue of survival just to keep your head above the digital waters.
