Valdosta Woman's Building on National Historic Register In 1917, a group of ladies had a wonderful dream, the dream was to build a clubhouse. The clubs were Chapter 471, United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Daughters of the American Revolution and Wymodausis. The land was donated, the ladies sponsored shows, dinners, parties and musicals to raise the money. The building cost $14, 027.02, on September 18, 1925 a grand opening was held with formal ceremonies. Valdosta Chapter 471, UDC was founded in 1901, one tradition has been a Christmas Tea. Special guests at the tea are friends, prospective members and international students from Valdosta State University. On December 6, 1995 at the annual Christmas Tea which promotes and tells about the Daughters of the Confederacy, a special ceremony was held. President Mrs. John Samaras presided and announced that the building is on the National Historic Register, a plaque has been placed to designate this. Over the years, the building has been used for flower shows, dances, banquests, weddings, reunions, parties, etc. It is truly an asset to Valdosta. |
