MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON STAFF AFFAIRS MEETING

May 11, 2004

COSA Chair-elect Patrick Smith called the meeting to order at 8:38 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room of the Palms Dining Center.  Members present:  David Bennett, Melinda Cutchens, Bobby Flowers, Shawn Gibbons, Jeff Giles, Jeff Grant, Inman Grimsley, Mike Hamm, Rosalyn Hatcher, Stanley Jones, Bob Lee, Shannon McGee, Mike McKinley, Patrick Smith, Josie Stone, Trisha Taylor, Carolyn Wilson and Tim Yorkey.  Members absent:  Sharon Butcher, Carolynn Gaston, Rebecca Kimbrough, Marshall McLane and Thor Withers.  Special guest:  Sue Lampert. 

Special Order of the Day:

            Sue Lampert gave a power point presentation on the staff survey results.  Attached is a copy of the recommendations that came from the survey.  A copy of the information from the power point presentation can be found on the COSA web site at: http://www.valdosta.edu/vsu/cosa/.

MINUTES:  

            There was a typo correction made to the April 13^th minutes.  The minutes for the April 13^th meeting were approved with the correction.  Also the COSA secretary was contacted by Jim Black’s office to correct the original quote in the April 13^th minutes ‘honoring the individual and community’ to ‘honoring the individual in community’ and noting that is Jim Black’s own personal motto and not one endorsed by the University. The secretary apologizes for the error and has made the appropriate changes to the minutes.

TREASURER’S REPORT: 

Ø       April:  Fund 10000         = $1,031.68

Ø                        Discretionary = $1,904.16           

Ø        Retirement Walkway   = $12,194.19

  The Treasurer’s report for April was approved as submitted.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

• Academic Scheduling/Procedures:  The ’05-’06 calendar has been sent to the Faculty Senate for approval. 
• Benevolence Committee:  No Report
• Elections:  June 8^th is the date for elections.  There will be 3 polling locations open from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.  They will be at Palms Dining Center, Plant Operations and the University Center.  If you would like to volunteer to work at one of these locations, please contact Bobby Flowers.  Voting for chair-elect was held.  The new COSA chair-elect for 2004-2005 will be Bobby Flowers.
• Faculty Senate:  Their next meeting will be May 20^th at 3:30 in the UC.
• Faculty/Staff Campaign: They met last week and are starting on next year’s campaign.
• Parking Appeals:  Mike McKinley stated that out of 263 tickets, the committee upheld 62% of the appeals while 38% of the appeals were dismissed for the month of April. 
• Policy:  No Report.
• Staff Appreciation Day:  This committee met on May 6^th.  It was decided to move SAD to October 8^th.  There was discussion to meet with the Art Dept. to work on a t-shirt design.  The next SAD meeting will be May 20^th at 2 p.m. in the University Union Conference Room.  This meeting is open to all employees who wish to participate with SAD.
• Staff Development:  The Personal Budgeting & Financial Management class being offered by Training & Development is going on today at the Cont. Ed. Bldg.
• Welfare Committee: 
  • Employee of the Semester:  No report.

• Retirement Walkway/Luncheon -Employee Recognition:  The bricks are here.  The luncheon is scheduled for June 10^th from 12-2 p.m.  The cost for the luncheon is $10.
• University Planning Advisory Council:  Next meeting is scheduled for April 26^th at 8:30 a.m.

REPORT FROM THE CHAIR:  Patrick stated that Rebecca wanted to thank everyone for their hard work.

NEW BUSINESS:

v      EEO Codes.

OTHER BUSINESS:

v      There was a suggestion that a recommendation be sent to Dr. Zaccari in ref. to the smoking policy that is being implemented in town around buildings.

v      Jeans for Justice

v      SGA & Faculty Senate support and involvement.

v      Ways to communicate to the campus (smart boards).
