MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON STAFF AFFAIRS MEETING

August 13, 2002

COSA Chair-Elect, Rebecca Kimbrough, called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room of the Palms Dining Center.  Members present:  Melinda Cutchens, Jeff Grant, Rosalyn Hatcher, Lisa Hayes, Stanley Jones, Rebecca Kimbrough, Sue Lampert, Trisha Taylor, and Carolyn Wilson.  Cody Guined represented the Student Government Association.

SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY: 

·        Rebecca Kimbrough presented information she received from Richard Hammond regarding the Student Recreation Center.   The fees for use of the Student Recreation Center are as follows:

Faculty     $60.00 per semester OR $175.00 per year

Staff          $60.00 per semester OR $175.00 per year

Spouse      $60.00 per semester OR $175.00 per year – Your spouse will be required to obtain a VSU One Card from VSU One Card Services for admittance to the Student Recreation Center.  The VSU One Card may be purchased for a fee of $15.00.  The initial purchase of the VSU One Card will be the only time your spouse is required to pay the $15.00 fee. 

Guest        $5.00 per day (limited to one guest per day) -  The guest must remain with the member in the Student Recreation Center.  Individuals must be at least 17 years of age to enter the Student Recreation Center.

Locker Rental/Towel Rental prices range from $25.00 - $60.00.  The price is determined by the size of the locker you would like to rent and whether or not you opt to rent towels.

                        Monday – Thursday - 6:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.

                        Friday – 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

                        Saturday – 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

                        Sunday – 2:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

                  Pool:

                        Monday – Thursday  - 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

                        Friday – 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

                        Saturday – 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

                        Sunday – 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

                   Climbing Wall:

                        Monday – Thursday – 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

                        Friday – 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

                        Saturday – 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

                        Sunday – 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Hours of operation during semester breaks, summer breaks and holidays will vary.  To obtain membership information you may contact Campus Recreation at 333-5898.

MINUTES:  

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as submitted.

TREASURER’S REPORT: 

Sue Lampert presented a written report of the three COSA accounts.

·        Fund 10000 = $2,301.90 (Note:  A total of $344.61 in unused money was returned to the State of Georgia from the Fund 10 state account at the end of June 2002.)               

·        Discretionary = $1,768.36

·        Retirement Walkway = $10,434.40

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

• Elections:  No report.
• Employee of the Semester Committee:  Rebecca Kimbrough reported that the Employee of the Semester Committee would announce the Employee of the Semester at the September 10^th COSA meeting.  She commented on the positive comments that so many individuals across campus received from their co-workers.
• Policy:  No report.

• Retirement Walkway-Employee Recognition Committee:  Rebecca Kimbrough reported on behalf of Tommye Miller that the next scheduled meeting of the Retirement Walkway-Employee Recognition Committee would be September 9^th at 3:00 p.m. in the Human Resources conference room.
• Staff Appreciation Day:  Rebecca Kimbrough updated everyone on the Fourth Annual Staff Appreciation Day scheduled for September 27^th at the Soccer Field on North Campus.  There will be a D.J. from WHLJ 97.5 playing a variety of music.  Games will include bingo, chess, dominoes, volleyball, checkers, horseshoes, and a dunking booth (4 throws for $1.00).  The menu will consist of barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, chips, brownies, cookies and ice cream.  Due to the recent resignation of the Chair of the Donation committee, Rebecca asked for volunteers to assist in contacting businesses to obtain door prizes.  As previously mentioned, Dr. Zaccari offered to purchase Staff Appreciation Day T-shirts for VSU staff.  If staff would like to purchase additional T-shirts, or if faculty or administrators would like to purchase one or more T-shirts the order form is online at the COSA website (http://www.valdosta.edu/vsu/cosa/) or you may contact Rebecca Kimbrough at 333-5941.  T-shirt prices are as follows:  $6.00 Small – XL,

$7.00 XXL, and $8.00 for XXXL.

OTHER COMMITTEE REPORTS:

• Academic Scheduling/Procedures:  No report.

• Faculty Senate:  No report.
• Parking Appeals:  Sue Lampert reported on behalf of Mike McKinley that there are four COSA members that are on the Parking Appeals committee.  Each week two of the four members attend the Parking Appeals session. 

·        Partners for Campus Excellence:  No report.

• Welfare Committee:  Rebecca Kimbrough indicated there would be a COSA-ON-THE-MOVE session scheduled for Plant Operations in late September. 

REPORT FROM THE CHAIR: 

Rebecca Kimbrough informed everyone that COSA Chair Shannon McGee is now a mother!  She and Jason are the proud parents of Colby Jason McGee.

OLD BUSINESS:

• Sue Lampert reported on behalf of Shannon McGee regarding the breakfast meeting with Dr. Zaccari on Wednesday, July 10^th, at 8:00 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room of the Palms Dining Center.  Those who attended the breakfast meeting each spoke briefly on their opinions of the meeting.  Some key points of interest were Dr. Zaccari’s vision regarding VSU, staff concerns, and the strategic plan for the University. 

NEW BUSINESS:

• Sue Lampert brought an item up for discussion regarding the Hugh C. Bailey scholarship fund.  Last year COSA contributed $50.00 toward the scholarship.  A motion was made to table the discussion until COSA could check with the VSU Foundation as to the status of the Hugh C. Bailey scholarship.
• Jeff Grant is gathering information for the next issue of the COSA-ON-THE-MOVE newsletter.  The newsletter will feature spotlights of three COSA Representatives, information regarding Staff Appreciation Day, and other articles of interest.  

OTHER BUSINESS:

·        The President of the Student Government Association, Cody Guined, was introduced to COSA.  Cody is looking forward to another successful year for the SGA and discussed his goals for the upcoming academic year.  He also stated that the SGA Senate elections would be taking place in September.
